So what have I been up to for the past year?

If you've ever read or visited this blog in the past you may have wondered why I havent posted anything in a very long time...

well let me show you. This is my new portfolio site :: http://ericvanic.wordpress.com

Im just about ready to apply around to video companies looking to hire....and I'll be updating the wordpress with new portfolio pieces as they roll in. I might keep the blogspot around just as a backup image/file host if I ever need it, but the new wordpress site will be my new home. So if you ever want to see what I'm up to, make sure to check that out first.

What else then? Well I completed the famas wip shots that I posted earlier. I did not finish it in time for the contest but I still think its a good portfolio addition. Also I entered in the next challenge after that one(The Modular Facade Challenge) also @polycount.com and ended up recently winning that one. w00t! again can u see the winning entry at my new site or over @ http://boards.polycount.net/showthread.php?t=54293&page=2 to see my thread

well its been a while

Howdy folks, I would first like to thank anybody who has taken the time to browse through or leave a comment in the last few months even though i have not been updating regularly. Your support means a lot. As i reflect I can see I've lost a lot of motivation and drive in myself; not only in just drawing and trying to get better, but almost in every area of my life. I made the decision a few months ago that i would be returning back to school for one more year to set things straight. The reason being was that I wasn't happy with the work i produced in my final year of animation and realized that it was not the career path for me. My heart just was not in animating, and i knew i could not force myself to do something I had no passion or love for. However, I have, and always wanted to be involved in the video game industry in one way or another, and now coming this sept I will get the chance to prove myself in the post grad 3D gaming course at Seneca college. I feel I now have a strong advantage knowing exactly what I want to do and where the bar is I have to reach in order to get what I want. Taking Maya was not a total waste as it gave me a glimpse into the world of 3D. I realize for me that this is it, and this is my last shot if I'm to make a serious run at landing a job at a gaming studio come next spring. I can not waste any more time or money and am aching to start. Over the past few months I've learned how important it is that i set goals for myself and have some sort of plan. Something I was very much lacking during my last year or so in college. Besides gearing up for a career in the gaming biz, I cant wait to hit the school gym and get back into shape. I've noticed I've put on a few pounds =)

I leave you now with a little doodle of Samus inspired from playing Super Metroid over the past couple of days. Such an awesome game even by today standards in my opinion. I can not wait now to get my hands on the prime trilogy.

well here it is. i finally got around to colouring the whole set of these, and im really happy i did. i was able to find a few very helpful tutorials on how to prepare line art and colour it....one of them was from my old animation/layout teacher jim zub. if you've never heard of him...check out his livejournal..hes a really smart guy.

scudworth ver 2

allright as promised here is an update on this piece. i was able to improve the quality sa bit by going in and cleaning out some gunk and making sure the lineart was as close to true black n white. also saved at a much higher resolution which i think helped a bit. and i left the interior hair lines black and corrected a little dot around collar/tie that just didnt look right

finallly....

well it only took me a year n half to get back to this but i finally threw down some colours. i did this realllllllly quickly inbetween watching what else but episodes of 24 and i WILL come back to it and fix up some of the lines try to make it cleaner. im now realizing that you really have to work in a pretty high resolution in photoshop if you want your end image to look really clean and crisp. i hope that by working thru this garbage now ill get to that stage soon enough

continuing with tests

ok heres number 2....im not liking how this one turned out as much as the first. i think i should change the lighting/background n play with gradients a little more

ive been looking thru wendlings books and cheeks work as well for ideas on how to approach this. its a little unsettling because there work is SO clean compared to mine and everything just looks so effortless that its driving me nuts...allright off to watch some more 24 and model after that...i really need to catch up on my 3D

alien guy test/workinprogress need heLP!

ok this is just a test/work in progress....im trying to learn how to cell shade, get that cool cheeks style of coloring down so comments n suggestions on how to improve PLease please please would help alot! i know im lazy and procrastinate like hell n would prolly rather watch 24 than touch a pencil ever again but im gonna buckle down and finish off the model sheet for this lil guy and do another character...probably a villian and a model sheet for him as well

this was done pretty quicky just selecting areas with the lasso tool and paint bucketing or adding gradients to the area until desired effect is achieved. i tried using my friends tablet that he let me borrow but its so small and shitty and awkward to use. i guess i just need to give it some more time n it will get better eventually.... =P
